What to Do When Your Car's A/C Compressor Stops Working
1. Initial Checks
Check the A/C Controls – Ensure the system is turned on and set to the coldest setting with the fan running.
Inspect the Fuse & Relay – Locate the A/C fuse in the fuse box (refer to the owner’s manual) and replace if blown. Test or swap the A/C relay with a similar one (e.g., horn relay) to check for failure.
2. Verify Compressor Clutch Engagement
Start the engine and turn on the A/C.
Observe the compressor clutch (front of the compressor). It should click and spin when engaged.
If the clutch doesn’t engage:
Check for power at the clutch connector (should be 12V+ when A/C is on).
Test clutch coil resistance (should be 2–5 ohms).
If no power, check pressure switches, wiring, and the climate control module.
3. Check Refrigerant Pressure
Low refrigerant (due to leaks) can prevent the compressor from engaging.
Use an A/C manifold gauge set:
Low side: Normal range ~25–45 psi (varies by temperature).
High side: Normal range ~150–250 psi.
If pressure is too low, the system may have a leak (check for oily residue around fittings).
4. Listen for Unusual Noises
Grinding/clicking noise? – Could indicate a failing clutch bearing or internal compressor damage.
Belt squealing? – The compressor may be seized, causing belt slip.
5. Electrical & Sensor Checks
Pressure switches – If faulty, they can block compressor operation.
A/C control module – Some vehicles disable A/C if engine sensors (like coolant temp) detect overheating.
Check for error codes – Use an OBD2 scanner for climate-related faults.
6. Possible Solutions
✔ If the clutch isn’t engaging but has power – Replace the clutch assembly.
✔ If refrigerant is low – Repair leaks, evacuate, and recharge the system.
✔ If the compressor is seized – Replace the compressor and flush the system.
When to Seek Professional Help
If you lack A/C tools (gauges, vacuum pump).
If the system has major leaks or contamination.
If electrical diagnostics are too complex.
